Hurricane Preparedness: A Checklist to Protect Your Family and Home

July 23, 2024

Ensuring your family’s safety and minimizing potential damage to your property should be a top priority. Being prepared can make all the difference when facing a natural disaster. At Associated Insurance Managers, we want to help you stay ready and resilient. Use the following assessment to gauge your preparedness and take any necessary steps to safeguard your loved ones and belongings.

Evacuation Plans

  • Do you know where you and your family would go if you have to evacuate? Planning ahead for evacuation is crucial. Identify a safe location where you can stay, such as a relative's home or a designated emergency shelter.

Pet Safety

  • Do you have emergency plans for your pet(s)? Many shelters do not allow pets, and animal clinics may close if they are in the path of the storm. Ensure you have a safe place for your pets, such as a pet-friendly hotel or a friend’s home outside the danger zone.

Medication Supply

  • If you take medicine, do you have a 7-day supply of medications or prescription drugs? Secure a week’s supply of essential medications. In the event of an emergency, access to pharmacies may be limited.

Lighting and Batteries

  • Do you have flashlights? Don’t forget batteries! Have multiple flashlights on hand, along with an ample supply of batteries to ensure you’re not left in the dark. Food and Water
  • Do you have at least a 3-day supply of drinking water and basic, non-perishable foods available? Stock up on at least one gallon of water per person per day and non-perishable food items to sustain your family for at least three days.

Cash on Hand

  • Will you have cash available if power outages disrupt normal services? ATMs and credit card machines may not function during a power outage. Keep cash in small denominations for essential purchases.

Documentation

  • For insurance purposes, have you taken photos or videos of your belongings? Documenting your possessions can expedite the insurance claims process in case of damage or loss.

Important Records

  • Do you have your family’s personal records and documents stored in a waterproof container? Store important documents, such as birth certificates, passports, and insurance policies, in a waterproof container to protect them from water damage.

Power Backup

  • Do you have a generator? Even a tropical storm can disrupt power to your home for several days. A generator can keep essential appliances running during a power outage, reducing the disruption to your daily life. Remember to operate safely by following the manual’s instructions.

Battery Packs

  • Do you have battery packs (that are charged up) to be used for cell phones, personal fans, flashlights, etc.? Ensure you have fully charged battery packs to keep your devices operational when power is out.

How Prepared Are You?

Take a moment to review your answers. How many “YES” responses did you have?

  • 9-10 YES responses: You’re well-prepared! Just make sure to review and update your plans regularly.
  • 6-8 YES responses: You’re on the right track, but there are still some areas to improve.
  • 5 or fewer YES responses: It’s time to take action and fill in the gaps to ensure your family’s safety and readiness!

Preparedness is key to mitigating the impact of a hurricane. By following these guidelines and taking proactive measures, you can protect your loved ones and your home.
